WASHINGTON, DC– Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s signing of the anti-choice “Geneva Consensus Declaration.” Around the world, millions of people are grappling with a deadly pandemic with no end in sight. Violence and instability have erupted from Belarus to Nigeria and from Nagorno-Karabakh to Thailand, to name just a few examples. Human rights, justice, and health care have gone woefully neglected for far too long in repressive societies the world over. With such unprecedented global challenges, it boggles the mind that the Trump Administration wasted precious taxpayer resources and unnecessary energy on co-hosting an event entitled the "Geneva Consensus Declaration" in order to attack reproductive health services for women.

This sham declaration neither advances women’s health nor improves children’s quality of life. As an American and grandmother of eight, I’m appalled that our government officials would stoop to such new lows. As Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, I condemn in the strongest possible terms such an abuse of platform. At a time when the world is in desperate need of American leadership, the silence from the Trump Administration on the most critical issues currently facing our planet continues to speak volumes.
