WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman, issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s further expansion of the Global Gag Rule, which continues an assault on women’s health and would undermine organizations that provide access to a wide range of health services including comprehensive family planning:

“Once again the Trump Administration has chosen ideology over sound policy. This morning’s announcement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that the Global Gag Rule will be further expanded is another slap in the face to women around the world. International NGOs should not be forced to choose between providing legal, comprehensive care with their own funds and accepting lifesaving assistance from the U.S.

“By putting abortion at the center of every health program, the Administration compromises our ability to support comprehensive, life-saving care as well as the effectiveness of our taxpayer dollars. In addition, imposing on other countries a standard that would be illegal in our own is un-American. As Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight this ill-advised policy.”
