Lowey Statement on Blocking of Trump Plan to End TPS

October 5, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against the Trump Administration’s efforts to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 300,000 immigrants from Haiti, Sudan, Nicaragua, and El Salvador:

“TPS holders have lived in the United States for years, raising families, contributing to the economy, and building lives here. The Administration’s plan to end TPS displays a remarkable lack of human decency and forces upon recipients the heart-wrenching, impossible choice of uprooting their families or facing deportation. I applaud this judicial decision to suspend the Administration’s callous, misguided plan, and I urge the Administration to end its efforts to target TPS holders. It is inhumane to force these families who have built lives in the U.S. to suddenly leave for an uncertain, and potentially dangerous future.”
