Lowey Statement on Belarus Elections and Violence Toward Protesters
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Belarus elections and violence toward protestors:
“The repression following Belarus’ presidential election is chilling and profoundly disturbing. Protesters are being intimidated and met with excessive force. It is clear that the Lukashenko government is violating basic norms and trampling democratic principles.
“As I have said before, a threat to democracy anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. I urge my colleagues in Congress to join me in calling on the government of Belarus to restore peace and demonstrate respect for universal values, including human rights. Elections must be free, fair, and transparent. Peaceful protesters must be permitted to assemble.
“Our own administration must also clearly voice this sentiment as well as reflect it meaningfully by example. We must all exercise our constitutional duty in defending these values on behalf of the American people.”
