Lowey Statement on Appointment of Special Counsel to Investigate Trump-Russia Connection
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (D-Rockland/Westchester), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, today released the following statement on the Department of Justice’s decision to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller as Special Counsel to investigate any connection between Russia and President Trump’s associates:
“Today, the Department of Justice appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as Special Counsel, authorizing him to investigate any links or coordination between the Russian government and associates of President Trump’s campaign. This is an appropriate step given the President’s indefensible attempts over the past week to derail the FBI’s ongoing investigation into his presidential campaign.
“Now it is time for Congress to immediately create a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate Trump’s ties to Vladimir Putin’s Russia, and then present all of the facts to the public. We must protect the fundamental integrity of our democracy. I hope Speaker Ryan and Congressional Republicans agree that the American people deserve nothing less.”
